Storing Renewable Energy Begins at Home

Almost all Australian solar power coming from the roof of private homes. There is no shortage of sunshine, but to develop solar energy, a storage solution is needed.

Large-scale solar power plant common in Germany, but in Australia transition to renewable energy has mostly occurred on an individual scale. More than one million homes in Australia now have solar panels, but how to save energy when it needs to emerge as the next challenge.

Most Australian renewable energy, and most of his efforts spread in the form of solar panels on the roofs of houses in the suburbs.

It comes with a number of challenges, and electricity network operators began to take steps to limit the amount of solar power that can be added to a region. In the state of Western Australia, the state company Western Power to prevent large-scale installations - greater than 30 kilowatts peak (kWp) - to supply power to the grid. Companies that supply the rural areas in the state, Horizon Power, October 2013 announced that if a solar power system is built, should be equipped with some sort of technology 'smoothing renewable energy' - basically a kind of battery.

 The limited capacity of batteries

Currently the problem is the battery either too expensive or inefficient. Even homes that have a relatively large solar installations often can not rely only on the source - even under the scorching Australian sun

"The main problem for me is not a lot of electricity storage technologies developed in the last 41 years I lived here," said Peter Holland, a resident who lives not far from the state capital, Perth.

"I always have 2 volt storage battery 12, but the amount of wasted so much," said Holland. "The battery is relatively inefficient and they are very expensive." Therefore Holland system that is not connected to the network requires a generator as a backup when the sun is not shining or when powering high-powered appliances.

Potential cost reduction

Answering complaints Peter Holland, there has actually been a number of developments related to electricity storage - especially with regard to battery. Even energy analysts and academics Ray Wills said that the lay battery technology means the reduction of production costs can be reduced more quickly.

"The battery is quite remarkable, because human beings have long used batteries and much longer than the deployment of the solar panels," said Wills. He considered the demand for more batteries, particularly lithium ion batteries that are often found in electronic equipment such as smartphones and laptops, will encourage increased production of batteries.

"We have seen an increase of 600 percent in the production of solar panels in the last 5 years and consequently the price of solar panels fell more than 80 percent within a few years," he wrote, "and we will see similar developments in the battery."

For Peter Holland, the moment was too long awaited. "Although my solar system is quite amazing, I was also disappointed and frustrated at not being able to achieve a level of efficiency that I want." Artphone and laptops, will encourage increased production of batteries.
